This
program was designed for developing an enriched literacy environment
for preschool children from ages 4-7. Recognizing that if
children do not learn to read efficiently, the path to independent
learning is blocked in every subject they encounter in their
school years. Reading does not develop incidentally but rather
requires human intervention and context. It requires bringing
together a number of complex actions involving the eyes, ears,
mouth, brain, motivation, interests, and past experiences.
Language processes such as listening, speaking, reading, and
writing develop in an interdependent manner. Gateway to literacy
recognizes the value of informal activities with books and
other print materials and that learning to read and write
requires active participation in activities that have meaning
in the child's daily life. Through Gateway to Literacy's emphasis
on alphabet, sound, book and language awareness activities
parents can facilitate their children to become successful
readers and learners.
